A kit is a defined set of products, assembled and delivered as a single unit. In industrial supply, that usually means one of four things: a job-site kit that mobilizes a crew, a maintenance pack matched to a recurring routine, a PPE issue kit for a new worker, or a customer-specified assembly built to a bill of materials.
The mechanism is simple: a kit converts many line items into one. One order, one delivery, one consistent set of contents. The economics follow from that mechanism — and so do the limits.
When kitting pays off
Kits earn their keep where the same combination recurs. A maintenance routine that consumes the same eight consumables every cycle is a kit waiting to happen. A contractor mobilizing twenty workers who each need the same PPE issue is ordering twenty of one thing, not two hundred of many.
- Recurring routines: the same items, in the same quantities, on a repeating cycle
- Role-based issue: every worker in a role receives the same standard set
- Mobilization: crews start with complete, consistent equipment from day one
- Multi-site standardization: every location issues the same packs, from the same definition
In each case the kit does two jobs at once: it removes administrative effort (one line item to order, receive and issue) and it removes variation (everyone gets the same contents, built to the same definition). The second job is usually worth more than the first.
When it doesn't
Kits don't fit low-frequency combinations of unrelated items — assembling a one-off grab bag costs more than ordering its parts. They also don't fit requirements where contents genuinely vary by worker or task; a 'kit' whose contents are negotiated at issue is just a slower order.
How to specify a kit
A kit specification has five parts: the contents (the bill of materials, with products and quantities), the packaging (how the kit is physically packed), the labeling (how it is identified — by role, routine or site), the schedule (one-time or recurring build), and the consumption data (how usage will confirm the quantities). The last part is the one most often skipped, and the one that keeps kits honest over time.
For recurring kits, the specification should be reviewed on a cycle like any replenishment program: contents against actual usage, quantities against waste, schedule against demand. Kits that aren't reviewed calcify — and a calcified kit is just inventory wearing a label.
Specify it well, review it honestly, and a kit becomes what it should be: the routine parts of supply, handled once, so the operation can spend its attention where it matters.
